Editorial Reviews about The First Year: IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)--An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed:

Heather Van Vorous has had IBS for over two decades; she endured the condition for six years as a child before even being diagnosed. Over many years she has educated herself on every aspect of this chronic condition—by listening to her own body, gradually modifying her diet, reading medical and scientific books and journals, talking with doctors, exploring stress management and alternative health therapies, and using the Internet to communicate daily with other people who have IBS. Now, as a "patient-expert," she guides all those newly diagnosed step-by-step through their first year with IBS. In a unique format, The First Year™—IBS walks you through everything you need to learn and do each day of your first week after diagnosis, each subsequent week of the first month, and the following eleven months of the crucial first year. In clear, concise, accessible language, Van Vorous covers a wide range of practical, medical, and lifestyle issues, beginning with coming to terms with the diagnosis and then moving on to subjects including:

• Key strategies for symptom prevention

• Guidelines, tips, and recipes for understanding and modifying your diet

• Stress management and exercise

• Dealing with family, friends, and co-workers

• Current medical research and medications

• Restaurants and holidays

• Effective alternative therapies

• Traveling and socializing

• Support group resources

By providing reliable, useful, empathetic, and up-to-date information you need to know when you most need to know it, The First Year™—IBS will be an indispensable book for everyone seeking to control their IBS and regain their health and happiness.

Summary: The Author Knows Exactly What She is Talking About
Comment: I have a very severe case of IBS and I followed the guidelines exactly as they were written, I have not had an attack in three weeks yet so far. I have reduced my medication from six pills a day to one a day. The physician said that I will probably never have to take them again, (I heard that the antispasmatic pills are hard on your liver in the long term) so this is great news for me to not have to take them anymore. I have also lost a lot of weight. This book has helped me the most by the nutritional guidelines you follow. The book is written so well and very easy to follow. To learn the difference between soluble fiber and insoluble fiber was the key for me. You have to remember this is a life style change, don't look back, you will feel great if you follow this book.

Summary: A great place to start !
Comment: I was diagnosed with IBS, but never really got any guidance from the local 'specialists' on what to do about it - I couldn't ever get more than a 5-minute discussion with a doctor on the subject.

This book does a great job of explaining what IBS is, and what to do about it. It might not be the most detailed or technical book on the market, but it at least got me to the point where I understood what to do. I followed some of the recommendations of this book (especially moving to a low-fat diet), and it has worked wonders.

STRONGLY recommended if you have IBS and just aren't sure where to start.

Summary: It's not what you eat but when...
Comment: I was diagnosed with IBS, and had a terrible habit of night eating. I would get up at 3-4 in the morning, eat a big snack, and then go back to bed. It took me a while to connect the morning IBS attack with the night eating, but sometimes the most obvious things are also the easiest to miss. I still have changed my dietary habits as all the book writers say to do (soy for dairy, no wheat, drink peppermint tea, etc), but I must say, if you are also a night eater, stop eating about two hours before bed, and resist the temptation to eat in the middle of the night. It will give your digestive system a chance to rest while your body is at rest. It makes sense, and it works. You will wake up without the morning IBS cramps, and can even look forward to a morning cup of coffee once in a while - one of the other things you're supposed to give up.

Summary: Well writen guide
Comment: The book is pretty much as the title describes. A step by step guide on learning the aspects and how to control IBS

Summary: A good book on IBS but....
Comment: This was the first book that I bought when I was first diagnosed with IBS seven years ago. First the good points: 1.) Soluble Fiber vs. Insoluble Fiber. Heather talks about eating Soluble Fiber before eating Insoluble Fiber and this works well for me for the most part. I tend to mix Soluble Fiber(bread) with meat and don't have much of a problem. Everyone is different. It also talks about giving up dairy which I completely agree with. Another good point of the book is Hypnotherapy which I'm a big believer in. I have a hypnosis tape at home and swear by it.

The Bad Points of the Book in my opinion are: Much research has been done since the writing of this book on the theory that IBS is really bad bugs(Candida, Bacterial Overgrowth, Parasites, etc...)in your gut. There are numerous books on this subject(Mark Pimintel's book, Countless Yeast/Fungus books, etc...) You won't find anything on Candida or Bacterial Overgrowth in this book though. Fruit will feed the Yeast and there isn't any discussion on how too much fruit is bad for the person with IBS. Fruit and Sugar feeds the bad bugs in our guts.

All in all it's a pretty good book but it's pretty outdated. I would like to see an update of this book with a Candida/Yeast Chapter included.
