Editorial Reviews about S is for Silence (Kinsey Millhone Mysteries):
|
Thirty-four years ago, Violet Sullivan put on her party finery and left for the annual Fourth of July fireworks display. She was never seen again.
In the small California town of Serena Station, tongues wagged. Some said she'd run off with a lover. Some said she was murdered by her husband.
But for the not-quite-seven-year-old daughter Daisy she left behind, Violet's absence has never been explained or forgotten.
Now, thirty-four years later, she wants the solace of closure.
In S is for Silence, Kinsey Millhone's nineteenth excursion into the world of suspense and misadventure, S is for surprises as Sue Grafton takes a whole new approach to telling the tale. And S is for superb: Kinsey and Grafton at their best.

Spotlight customer reviews about S is for Silence (Kinsey Millhone Mysteries):
|
Customer Rating: Summary: Another Top Grafton Mystery Comment: Kinsey Millhone takes on a 34-year-old cold case in this nineteenth offering of the incomparable alphabet series by Sue Grafton. Violet Sullivan kissed her seven-year-old daughter goodbye on the 4th of July 1953, and headed to the fireworks in her brand new Chevrolet Bel Air, Pomeranian puppy in tow. To daughter Daisy's dismay, her mother never returned.
Not only was Violet never found, but also neither was the car or the puppy leading authorities to deduce she had taken off for parts unknown. Besides leaving her daughter behind, she also left an abusive husband and an empty savings deposit box. Known for her liaisons with every man in town, there were numerous reasons why Violet may have wanted to start her life over.
Now, after living for years haunted by the disappearance of her mother, wondering why she took the puppy, but never came back for her, Daisy decided she needed to know the truth.
Allowing that cold cases are not her forte, Kinsey begins the hunt. Temporarily settling in near Serena Station, CA, she eventually begins to hit pay dirt.
Grafton puts to good use the chapters told in the voice of the various town inhabitants in 1953, intertwining their stories with Kinsey's search for Violet. The reader is allow to experience the sights and sounds of the period, and sense the growing desperation Violet experiences in her desire to live a better life.
There are numerous leads and dead ends to keep the reader guessing as to the possible outcome. Thus, the ending comes as a surprise. Grafton is at the top of her game in this superb offering.
S is for Silence (Kinsey Millhone Mystery)
Customer Rating: Summary: Different Perspectives... Comment: I loved this book. In S is for Silence, Kinsey is approached by a young woman wanting to find out what happened to her mother...over thirty years ago. While Grafton's previous books have been from Kinsey's point of view, this one shifts, and not only lets us see things through Kinsey's eyes, but flashes back and gives us other character's perspectives.
In this time of instant information and technological wizardry, it is interesting to see how a private investigator in the 1980's had to find out information from an event that happened 30 years before that. No Google searches for Kinsey!
I am glad that Grafton has chosen to keep Kinsey in real time, which leaves her in the eighties. Kinsey is detail oriented and an old fashioned sleuth. This book grabbed me from the start and didn't let go!
Customer Rating: Summary: S is for Superb Comment: Apparently, it's been a while since anyone left feedback regarding S Is For Silence, but after reading two-page views, neutral to negative responses, I feel Ms. Grafton is being pounced on for either PI'ing outside Santa Teresa or writing a story, future, to past, to future.
S was the first novel that turned me on to Kinsey, or rather, Sue Grafton. I found her style intriguing and down-to-earth.
Next thing I knew, I searched Amazon and found a seller that had books A-S, purchasing the entire shabang. After all, S is book 19, 18 others needed reading. It's important familiarlizing oneself with all characters, the only way to accomplish this was starting with Book A.
Other than, I believe, M is for Murder, (nonsense ending) so far so good.
Customer Rating: Summary: GRAFTON SCORES ANOTHER WINNER WITH "S IS FOR SILENCE" Comment: In S is for Silence, Kinsey Milhone is hot on the trail again, but this time it's a cold case. After nineteen novels, if you've read one or more you probably feel that you know Kinsey, so most things about her are familiar. If not, plan on going back in the series and reading more.
The story telling is a departure from the usual, because we have lots of flash backs to the missing woman named Violet Sullivan who disappeared on Independence Day in 1953. Violet's daughter Daisy was only seven when her mother disappeared. Now she wants to know if she's dead or alive. Did she abandon Daisy or did something happen to her. And what happened to a brand new car and $50,000 Violet claimed to have received from an accident settlementand squirreled away ?
Kinsey has no trouble learning that Violet was a free spirit who didn't have the greatest reputation around town, but was a real dreamgirl to many guys who shouldn't have been dreaming. She drove off in a new car she managed to wrangle between threatening to leave her abusive, no-good husband and charming the car dealer to make a great deal and turn his head the other way when it came to hubby's bad credit. Unfortunately for the car dealer, he imagined Violet as more than a customer.
Sue Grafton, in her great style, leads the reader on a twisted path until the case is solved. If you want to find out what happens, I suggest you settle into a cozy chair, get a cup of tea or your favorite beverage, and jump into the story feet first. She'll keep your mind hopping while you try to figure out whodunit and what actually happened!

Customer Rating: Summary: More of a Suspenseful Whodunit Comment: Let's go back to 1953. A small town, an "Easy" married woman whose looked down upon & her new Chevy. One Fourth of July weekend she disappears never to be seen or heard from again. 34 years later her disappearance is revisited by her daughter & a PI. Did the woman, Violet Sullivan, meet with an untimely end or did she take her secret stash of cash & move on in life? Did she leave to escape her abusive alcoholic husband, leaving her 7 year old daughter behind? We don't know.
A cast of characters unfolds, in which most any of them could be suspect of Violet's disappearance; if in fact Violet met an untimely end. What actually happened with her needs to be discovered.
Ms. Grafton eventually takes the reader & each character back to 1953 in a devoted chapter. These chapters help build the reader's suspense.
The mystery is nicely played out & I found the book well written. I found it a little long in it's descriptions at times, but by no means boring.
I did find the culmination at the end came off a bit too quickly to fit the story. The climax in the last couple of pages became anti-climatic. If not for the ending, I believe I would have gone with 5 stars. If you like a whodunit, this is a very good read
